Directions To Storm Treatment Area (STA)5: * From Immokalee: Continue east on C.R. 846 (Immokalee Rd.) in to Hendry County. Turn right (east) at the intersection with C.R. 833 and drive to the intersection with C.R. 835 (signed). Turn left. Stay on C.R. 835 to Blumberg Road (watch for the big communication tower) and turn right (south). Continue another 9 miles to the STA-5 turnoff (dirt road). Go south for 2-1/2 miles on the dirt road to the STA-5 entrance gate. Park before the gate in the area to the right (map below). ***** Click Here for Important Additional Trip Information ***** Click Here for STA-5 Bird List You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view and print-out the bird list. The Acrobat Reader is available free at Adobe's website. Reminders: Bring sunscreen, water, lunch/snacks. A spotting scope is very helpful. Wear hats and closed-toe shoes. Tour-participants must stay on the levee. We are allowed to drive around the levee. There is a port-o-let on site. All participants must sign a liability release upon arrival. Lunch on your own. |

Where We Will Meet: We will meet at the entrance to Collier-Seminole State Park on US Rte. 41 aka Tamiami Trail, south of Naples at 8:00 A.M. From there, we will caravan the few miles to Oil Pad Road in the 10,000 Islands N.W.R. – the only land access road within the refuge. Note: parking along US Rte. 41 at the entrance to Oil Pad Road is very limited! Please carpool from home as much as possible! Considerable walking is involved although part of the road is paved but most of it isn’t. There are no facilities. After birding this area, we will continue onto the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk in the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve State Park. Further east, we will have lunch at either the Everglades City Visitor Center (jct. US Rte. 41 & SR 29) or possibly the H.P. Williams Rest Area (jct. US Rte. 41 & Turner River Rd.). Afterward, some members may want to bird the nearby Kirby Storter Boardwalk or the Turner River/Wagonwheel Rd./Birdon Rd. “Loop” or even the famous Loop Road – all within the Big Cypress National Preserve. * A lot of walking is involved. |

N.W.R Please note that the 6:00AM start time is because we are going to see the American Woodcock flight displays. This is a rare treat to see this spectacle so far south in Florida and we have been given special permission to see (hear is more apropos) it. We will meet at 6:00AM at the entrance to the Roth Work Center which is approximately one mile north on S.R. 29 from Exit 80 of I-75 (Alligator Alley). The Roth Work Center is located on the west side of S.R. 29. Look for the mailbox and gated road going to the Roth Work Center on your left as you head north from Exit 80 of I-75. Directions to the Florida Panther N.W.R.: Recommended: Take I-75 from Ft. Myers/Naples as if heading toward Ft. Lauderdale/Miami. S.R. 29 is approximately 20 miles east of the toll booth on I-75 (Alligator Alley). The toll is $2.50. After meeting at the Roth Work center, we will caravan to the helipad area of the Refuge where Larry Richardson, Florida Panther N.W.R. biologist and I have seen the woodcocks displaying in previous years. Afterward, we will bird some other areas of the refuge including the Hunt Club Road. Lunch will be a tailgate affair. |

Checks are payable to the Caloosa Bird Club and may be sent or given to Pat Gladstone. Participants should bring a sack lunch and enough money for dinner at a buffet restaurant. The bus will return to Fort Myers around 8:00 PM. |

Boat trip to the Rookery Islands run by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. We will be having an afternoon boat ride out to the rookery islands on the Good Fortune boat. Members should plan to be there at 4:30 PM. The trip is 2 hours. The cost, etc will be discussed at the Board meeting on Feb 3rd and sign up at the meeting in Feb and Mar. This trip will be limited to 30 people. Directions are : At 951 and Hwy 41, head south towards Marco Island. Continue south on 951 for approximately 3 miles and turn right onto Shell Island Road. Shell Island Road is just before fiddler's creek, which is on the left. Continue on Shell Island Road for 2.5 miles, following the "Conservancy Boat Tour" signs to the Good Fortune. Shell Island Road is primitive; please allow 15 minutes for the 2.5 mile road. The parking area will be on your right. After you park, follow the path to the boat dock.
